BABBLERS PRESS - The Apostle Peter released a statement about two thousand years ago that almost seems to predict a fiery end for mankind. In chapter 3 verse 10 of Peter's second published letter he claimed that the return of Christ to earth would also include the heavens passing away with a great noise and the elements melting with fervent heat.
"The earth and the works that are in it will be burned up," he reportedly said. Some of the wording Peter used sound eerily similar to what happens during a nuclear explosion, prompting some bible students to wonder if God may use nuclear energy to bring about the total destruction of the earth as we currently know it. "There are over 16,000 nuclear weapons in the world today," said one long-time student of the Word and the world. "They are located in nine different countries, but some 95 per cent of these weapons are to be found in just two countries, the United States and Russia. And if any of these weapons fall into the wrong hands then the entire world could be in big trouble." Other bible students point to the fact that the Apostle John spoke of a thousand year reign of Christ on this earth in his best-selling book, "Revelation." Therefore, these students reason that the total obliteration of this current earth may not happen for at least another 1,000 years. In any case, they said, both John and Peter speak of the creation of a New heavens and a New Earth which will be free from any form of death, destruction, pain or sorrow. "Christians have nothing to be afraid of and lots to look forward to," said one of the students. "I wish I could say the same for the unbeliever."
